Cory Tetford celebrating release of new CD “In the Morning”

Celebrating the release of his much anticipated second solo CD, In the Morning, Halifax-based musician Cory Tetford will perform an intimate acoustic performance with special guests at The Carleton Music Bar & Grill in Halifax on Wednesday, June 7 at 8 p.m.

In the Morning features the incredible voice and songwriting of a man raised on gospel and country music and stellar musicianship and guitar skills honed in countless performances nationally and internationally over the past twenty-five years.

We had a chance to interview Cory and learn more about him and his music. We are looking forward to his performance at The Carleton Music Bar & Grill.

Jenn: How does your background influence your music?
Cory: My dad is a retired preacher… I grew up singing gospel music with my dad and two older bothers, Glen and Wade. We travelled around Newfoundland every weekend playing in churches. Music is really all I’ve ever known. While I write and perform many different genres of music, I can’t really get away from my gospel roots… It comes through in my voice.

Jenn: Who are some of your musical influences?
Cory: First and foremost is my dad and brothers for sure, but Vince Gill, Ray Charles, Amy Grant and Emmylou Harris are big influences on me.

Jenn: Is there a story or meaning behind your new album “In the morning”?
Cory: Ya, not to wait 17 years between records!! 😉 But seriously, this record is a more mature, relaxed me. I’ve had time to find who I really am as a performer and human, and I think that comes through on this record.

Jenn: Do you have any plans to tour in the near future?
Cory: I’ve been on the road with Alan Doyle for the past few years. He keeps me very busy! There will be some time in the fall that he’ll be doing other things for a couple of weeks, I’m planning on touring my record then.

Jenn: Do you have a song off your new album you consider a favourite and why?
Cory: I am very fond of Live Another Day… That performance is live in my studio, just me and a piano. I had just finished writing the song on the road and as soon as I got home I recorded it. I then sent that to my friend Kevin Fox who scored the string section. I managed to capture a lot of emotion on that song. That was my goal for the whole record really… Capturing emotion as opposed to having a “perfect” sounding record.

Jenn: What was it like co-producing with Alan Doyle?
Cory: Doyle is so positive and energetic that it’s physically impossible not to get excited about the project! He has great ideas and is a very prolific writer. We wrote a bunch together for this record.

Jenn: Is there anything else you would like to include about your album or acoustic performance at the Carlton Music Bar and Grill?
Cory: It’s gonna be a fun night… I’ll be joined by Kendel Carson on fiddle and Chris LeDrew on pedal steel.
